GLOSSARY
GARCINIA CAMBOGIA (GARCINIA)

Garcinia Cambogia (Garcinia)

How does it work?

Garcinia is the fruit rind of the Garcinia cambogia plant used in herbal medicine as an aid in weight loss and fat reduction.1 It’s effects are attributed to naturally occurring hydroxycitric acid (HCA), a derivative of citric acid.Developing animal studies have shown the administration of flavonoids found in Garcinia lowered both cholesterol and triglyceride levels.3 Some findings show improved glucose metabolism and leptin-like activity,4 and another study was able to suppress body fat accumulation.5 A meta-analysis of Garcinia concluded that Garcinia extracts/HCA generates weight loss on the short term however more rigorous future trials are needed.6

What results can be expected?

Garcinia may assist in weight loss, fat reduction, lowering of both cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and improve glucose metabolism however further rigourous trials are needed to verify these effects.7
