Creatine Alpha Ketoglutarate

 

How does it work?

Creatine is found naturally in the body, mostly in muscle tissue and supplementation is used to improve exercise performance and increase muscle mass in athletes.1 This increase in muscle mass and improvement on performance is seen in short periods of extremely powerful activity, especially during repeated bouts, but not in endurance exericse or aerobic activity.2 This is due to creatine being largely required for the production of ATP (energy) during and following intense exercise.3 Creatine levels in muscle tissue become depleted during intense exercise therefore to sustain energy availability for short bouts of intense exercise, creatine supplementation can assist in preventing this depletion and improve energy performance.4 Creatine Alpha-Ketoglutarate is a form of creatine in which alpha-ketoglutarate (AKG) is bound to creatine.5 AKG is readily absorbed by intestines therefore it is thought that Creatine AKG improves the absorption and uptake of creatine into muscle cells through reducing the need for creatine transporters.6 Further research is required to confirm this claim.

What results can be expected?

Creatine supplementation may assist in improving energy performance and muscle mass for short periods of high intensity exercise and sports.7 Creatine Alpha-Ketoglutarate may improve the absorption and uptake of creatine into muscle cells.8
