CINNAMON (CINNAMOMUM CASSIA)

Cinnamon (Cinnamomum cassia)

 

How does it work?

Cinnamon is used in western, ayurvedic and chinese medicine for its ability to enhance insulin sensitivity as well as providing hypoglycaemic, carminative, antitumour and antioxidant actions.1 This is due to containing 90% essential oil, consisting primarily of cinnamaldehyde which attributes to most of these therapeutic effects.2

What results can be expected?

Cinnamon may assist in regulating blood sugar levels and help reduce insulin resistance.3 Studies have shown cinnamon to have glucose and lipid-lowering effects in those with type II diabetes and improve insulin resistance in those with polycystic ovarian syndrome.4 Due to its carminative and astringent effect, cinnamon is also helpful in reducing dyspeptic conditions such as bloating, flatulence and diarrhoea.5
